From the car park at the church in Herold, we follow Zschopauer Strasse to the edge of Herold, heading towards Spinnerei (northeast). Shortly before leaving town, we turn left onto “Am Kalkwerk“. We pass the old kilns of the lime works and continue towards Forsthäuser, first crossing the Helsigbach stream and then following the yellow-marked path uphill until we reach a hut. Continue straight ahead. After a short climb past rock formations on the right, we keep to the left and reach the next hut. From here, we follow the green markers to the left towards Thum. At Plattenstrasse, we keep left towards Thum until we reach the Thum/Ziegenbank junction, which provides a delightful view of the mining town of Thum. From here we keep following the green markers towards Thum. We reach Thum via the so-called Hahnweg. At the sports field, we turn left onto Hainstrasse. This continues to the left and becomes Brauhausstrasse. Passing Neumarkt square, where the Volkshaus is located, we turn left onto Rathausplatz. During the summer, a collection of cactuses can be admired in front of the town hall (seating also available). The entrance to Tiergarten Thum zoo is right next door. Follow the street Rathausplatz to Herolder Strasse. Here, we turn left. After a short walk on the left we reach the access point up to the “Bastei”, which is marked by a wooden portal. The yellow-marked trail runs uphill past the Georgstein to the Bastei viewpoint, and from here to the Georgsfelsen viewpoint. We follow the yellow path through the forest until we reach an old avenue that leads us to the Wettinplatz. Today, this former estate cemetery is marked with a memorial stone. From here, we follow the green-marked trail to the right, which leads us over fields and then through a forest towards Herold. At the fish pond we go left along the Herolder Weg, and turn right after the houses to stay on Herolder Weg. At the junction with Oberer Dorfstrasse, we keep to the right and follow the street along the river Wilisch to Herolder Strasse, which we follow to the left for a few metres to Annaberger Strasse. Bahnhofsplatz is located here, which used to be a stop on Thum’s old narrow-gauge railway. Via Bahnhofsplatz, we come to the street “Am Kraftberg”, which we follow to the left to Drebacher Strasse. Here we turn left and immediately right again. After a few metres we are back to where we started.
